Rainbow Rice-Sensorial Activity

The last week was all about colours in our Montessori Trays , so to end the week I planned a rainbow themed activity for Nirvaan.I had Rainbow rice in my mind since long but somehow wanted to introduce this to the sensorial activity when he would be able to differentiate colours. This was the right time as he can do sorting colour wise now.

Making Rainbow rice is very easy and it took hardly 15 mins for me to make primary coloured rainbow rice.

Ingredients required:

1.Rice (4 cups for four colours)

2.Vinegar

3.Food colour (I took the primary colours-Red,Green,Yellow,Blue)

4.Mixing bowl and some newspaper to dry the coloured rice.

Method:

To one cup of rice add one table spoon of vinegar and few drops of food colour.

Mix it well and let it dry.

How we enjoyed with the Rainbow Rice

Since it was weekend and he spends time with his father the most I wanted both of them to enjoy their day and hence they both did this activity together.I wanted Nirvaan to have fun and make the coloured rice rainbow on his own and believe me toddlers are great at mixing stuff without instructions and help.

I gave one colour at a time with few blocks of same colour for a free play and soon he wanted all and mixed them.

I think almost for half and hour he was busy pouring the rice in different container.

Then came pouring with funnel and his juicer was of the right size with handle. He scooped poured in the funnel used almost all kinds of spoons available in his kitchen.

He even took the rice to cook in his kitchen,I never knew he notices so much and knows that rice is meant for cooking.

His activity table was finally used for some more pouring and throwing of the rainbow rice.

He did some practical activity by using brush and pan to pick the spilled rice. I tried clicking pictures but my phone memory ran out and I went to transfer the pictures and videos to the laptop and He was busy for good 1 and half hour just repeating pouring spilling the rice on the mat picking it with pan and brush.

Watch the video to checkout how the activity went

And some more fun and free play

The quantity of rice may seem less here because I have just made four colours and will be doing many activities and introducing new colours to our rainbow rice. After the play was over I stored the rice for future Play.

Many mom ask me rather tell me that cleaning is a task hence they avoid such activities so here are my tips for easier cleaning after messy play

1.Retrict the play area

2.Use a mat so that cleaning would mean only cleaning the mat

3.Make your baby wear clothes that  you won’t regret getting spoiled.

4.Make cleaning a part of play ,initially with younger toddlers it might seem like it doubles your task but eventually they learn and start doing it and enjoy cleaning as well.

Hope these tips and play idea will make your activities with kids more interesting and hassle free.

Product Review-Mamaearth Mothers Range

As a mother we go through a lot and expect very less in return, all we want is love from our babies and care from the loved ones. When we talk about motherhood and the products related to it are all about babies. So here comes a brand which launched its Mothers range exclusive for mothers  on Mothers day.

So as you all know I have been using the Mama Earth Baby products since a while now and loving it.When Mama Earth  launched its Mothers range of product, I was more than excited to try them out and guess what! They were kind enough to send across three of their products for an honest review.

This is what I received

IMG_4360.PNG

1.Mamaearth Calming Body Wash

2.Mamaearth Argan Hair Mask

3.Mamaearth Nourishing Body Lotion

(Packaged nicely in  a beautiful travel kit/bag )

I have a habit of checking the ingredients (side effects of being mother) so when I Unboxed and held my hands on the non toxic Mothers range the first thing I did was a quick glance at the back side of the bottles to check and was more than happy to see the check boxes with

  • phthalates free
  • mineral oil free
  • paraben free
  • SLS free

marked on it.And yes not to miss it is enriched with their secret mama’s love oil.

I have been using the Body wash and body Lotion daily and have used the hair mask thrice. This review is based on my personal experience with the product.

Mamaearth Calming Body Wash

As a mother all you long for is a long pampering session where you can take bath without your kids knocking at the door and asking you what you are doing inside.Well that is a dream but at least if you can grab that loofah and apply a body wash is a bargain enough. So my bargain is with this product.

The body wash is lathery and has a strong soothing peppery fragrance.A small amount on loofah is enough for a soapy lathery bath.

I have a dry skin and it didn’t dry my skin out post bath. After my bath I use the lotion which is reviewed below as well.

Mamaearth Nourishing Body Lotion

So I have a dry skin , the real test of the skin care products comes in with the lotions. It has be extremely long-lasting with moisturising my skin to get a thumbs up from my end.The Mama Earth Lotion has again a very peppery fragrance just like the body wash but is milder.

The Lotion is not sticky and quickly absorbs into the skin keeping the skin hydrated and moisturised for a long time.I will be testing this product again in winters to see the effectiveness as the real test of lotions is when they are applied in winters.

I suggest using the lotion after patting your skin dry after bath with a body wash.Reason is simple body wash is not harsh and doesn’t dry the skin out patting and not rubbing retains the effect of water on the skin and applying a lotion on a hydrated skin makes the lotion last for a longer duration.

Mamaearth Argan Hair Mask

I have used it thrice and let me share my very honest experience with you all.As I have mentioned I have a dry skin and yes I have dry hair too.

The first time I used the hair mask it left my hair dry and frizzy.I was disappointed but I thought of giving it a try at least  thrice before giving my verdict. The second time I used and I expected the same result but to my surprise my hair felt soft ,the effect was visible a day after the use.The same happened when I used it for the third time my hair felt soft and shiny.I used it thrice in a span of 10 days and my hair feel much better now.

The reason why my hair felt dry and frizzy for the first time was I was expecting a miracle in just one wash.Hair products have a long-term effect and specially when you have dry hair the products take time to show results.

While I was pregnant I never bothered about checking the products I used but I seriously wish I did.And I so wish MamaEarth was launched then,I would leave a suggestion with MamaEarth to introduce a pregnancy Gift pack so that I can gift my expecting friends with this bundle of non toxic goodness.

I will keep you all posted with my ongoing reviews on these products regarding the long-term effect and any thing new that crops up on Instagram. So follow me there if you have not done already and I shall see you there.

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post ,I was sent across the products mentioned for an honest review. The skin care products have different results on different skin type and my experience is based on my skin and hair type which is dry.

Toy Review- Hape Lacing Vehicles

I was searching for lacing beads online when I came across this beautiful product.I am in love with wooden toys and that is my small effort towards a greener earth. One look at the product and I knew what I wanted to do with these beautiful wooden cars.

IMG_4098.JPG

My son is not a car freak but he loves cars and when the package arrived he was more than happy to see the beautiful  colourful wooden cars.

These lacing vehicles are from Hape and I was so happy to find it in amazon.Priced at Rs599.00,its a set of 12 lacing vehicles which includes cars, ship, trees, cloud and stop sign.It came with a lacing red thread.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Review- Priced at Rs 599.00 I expected the cars to be little bigger in size but then as lacing beads the size is good. The lace is not good quality wise whereas the quality of wooden lacing vehicles is very good.

Its non toxic and a nice product for colour recognition, lacing, couting etc.I find it a very innovative lacing idea.

Rating-3/5

As you know when I review a toy I also mention the various ideas the toys can be used so that the kids doesn’t lose interest easily and quickly. So this time also we didn’t keep ourself limited to lacing but we had more fun activities with these lacing vehicles.

1.Lacing– Fine motor skill can be fun and at the same time challenging for the toddlers. This can keep them busy for a long time but with lots of motivation as inability to perform a particular task can make them anxious.

My son tried many times to lace the vehicles but the lacing thread has small hard ending to lace and and it doesn’t pass through the vehicles completely. For an 18 months old the lacing thread is not suitable but the product is ideally for 3 yrs and above.for older kids it is good and lacing can be done with little concentration.

2.Stacking– The most common and fun activity for a toddler is stacking and knocking the stack down.

IMG_4105.JPG

Check the video at the end of the post to see how Nirvaan enjoyed stacking and knocking it down.

3.Counting– The cars can be used for counting in a fun way. While lacing the child can count till 12 and then you can remove two and ask how many are left and similarly addition.

4.Colour Sorting– This time to make the colour sorting fun I made a parking lot with different coloured parking slot.  Nirvaan was not able to sort the cars by its colour but with prompt he was able to put few cars to the right slot. But he had fun parking and taking the cars out of the parking lot.

5.Free Play– I staged this free play for him.I cooked a story about a farm near the river with cow and horse in it and he had a fun time driving his car through the farm.

Toddler Meltdowns and a Mother’s confession

Its a confession post, yes I want to confess I have been a completely non Montessori when it comes to handling my sons tantrums and melt downs.I have shouted on him told him will throw him out if he doesn’t stop his drama, have man handled him.It can’t get any crazier at 18 months, he has been behaving so strong headed that it becomes so difficult to handle him.

While flying from Oman to Kolkata we had a connecting flight at chennai so it was a long travel and needless to mention exhausting; we were ready for a tired baby to carry but toddlers are the most unpredictable species on this earth. He was full of energy and refused to sleep and this resulted in a highly cranky baby  at landing.Just as we landed and were boarding the bus he had a desire to climb the stairs of the flight again and again and yes we had a bad melt down and I cursed the airport authority for not having an aero bridge but then the reason would have been something else for a cranky fit.No amount of cajoling and counselling stopped him from crying his heart out and all we could do was trying our skills to calm him down in turn till the time he was tired and slept in the cab. This was a whole half an hour before he slept.

That half an hour I had been angry felt like crying myself, leaving him alone for a while but no options were possible as we were not at home. It added to my frustration and the second melt down at home made me furious but since he was surrounded by my in laws I had to control some how.

After two days we travelled to Delhi to my Mom’s place where I had a final showdown  he refused to go to anyone and was cranky for no good reason. The reasons were pretty obvious, his father left for oman so he was missing him, he is used to just two of us so new people with his father not being around was completely unacceptable for him, but my mind refused to acknowledge these reasons  and I shouted, shouted for the very first time on him so badly that even thinking about that episode now makes me feel guilty.I told him I would throw him out and cried my heart out and told him now I can’t handle him.

How could I? He has been travelling and was tired, he is not use to so many new faces and he was meeting new every time, he is teething and that makes it worst for him.The faces he is showing arrogance to are new to him and it might hurt me seeing him not accepting my mom but for him they are just new people he doesn’t remember a bit of what my mom did for him or what  my sister did for him.My expectation of him accepting my dear ones is so unreal.

So this episode of my shouting and break down made me learn one thing. Losing my temper did good to no one. My mother and sister were upset with me for behaving so bad and losing it on the poor baby.My baby hugged me thinking I am upset and was clingy all the time.I have never felt so bad in my entire life.

This has made realise few things

  • Understand what my baby is going through.
  • Not to pass the burden of my expectations on to his shoulders
  • Keep my anger and frustration to myself and never pass it on to the baby.I know it is difficult but somehow its really important.
  • A meltdown needs a calm parent , a frustrated parent only adds to the misery.
  • Everyone goes through it I am not alone may be the only one at that point of time .
  • People will give me looks and suggestions but my baby is none of any one’s business.
  • Relax and remember that he is my same baby who gets fits of laughter for no reason ,so a meltdown here and there is ok.

I didn’t write this post to tell the tips to handle the meltdowns but honestly just wanted to share an experience with mommies so that somewhere some mommy would relax reading it and thinking she is not the only one and feel less guilty maybe.
